ERM is seeking a motivated Senior-Level Environmental Consultant to join our Contaminated Site Management (CSM) practice team in Boston, MA. The ideal candidate brings significant consulting experience and client relationships, in order to provide practice leadership, strategic direction, and cutting-edge technical support to grow ERM’s CSM practice.

As a senior leader, you will be fully accountable for successfully selling and consulting on site remediation related projects to build a sustainable business locally, while networking with ERM's global CSM practice team to share best practices across the globe. This is a partner-track opportunity for a senior-level professional looking to advance their career with a global environmental leader, and to make a significant impact in successfully implementing ERM's global strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement strategic business/action plan, provide leadership, and deliver financial results to grow opportunities across ERM’s CSM service lines [e.g., site investigation and remediation, risk assessment, financial analysis of remediation liabilities, environmental construction management, brownfields redevelopment, site closure, decommissioning, and demolition].
  • Collaborate with other ERM global practitioners to execute site remediation projects, including participating on teams comprised of CSM professionals from multiple offices around the global organization. Actively seek opportunities to sell and assist in the delivery of CSM work world wide.
  • Serve as a key member of the "core" leadership team to drive double-digit profitable growth of ERM’s CSM practice.
  • As a senior “seller/doer”, play a key practice role, and lead teams in winning $750,000 to $1.5 million in new CSM services annually. Identify and develop new opportunities, prepare effective technical proposals, and take active leadership role in the development of new business with new and existing clients. Develop and expand client relationships that generate repeat business.
  • Capitalize on existing client relationships to expand ERM’s profile and market share in the regional CSM market (through a combination of excellence in technical delivery and business development).
  • Direct and develop complex site remediation and construction projects with multi-person project teams. Oversee multiple projects within scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Provide leadership in managing staff performance, recruiting and retention, and mentoring personnel for overall success of practice team.
  • Develop a working understanding of ERM’s other consulting practice areas and actively support cross-selling other services to existing clients.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS/MS in engineering or related discipline; PE registration required, LSP/LEP certification preferred.
  • 15+ years of relevant site remediation experience, including environmental consulting experience.
  • Proven business development experience for large programs/contracts and client relationships supported by repeat business.
  • Consistent "seller/doer" track record of delivering annual sales of at least $750,000 (net revenue).
  • Excellent writing, communication, strategic thinking, and “people” skills.
  • Exhibit one or more core strengths (e.g., engineering, remediation technologies, litigation, or sustainable remediation) that you are recognized for by clients or in the broader market.
  • Viewed as valued advisor by a number of existing clients.
  • Advanced knowledge of the local regulatory climate, with proven negotiation skills with state and local regulators.

Sr. Environmental Engineer

NStar is currently searching for a Sr. Environmental Engineer in our Westwood office.

This position is responsible for environmental permitting, due diligence and regulatory compliance relating to work on major or complex energy infrastructure projects, including the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution lines and natural gas pipelines.  This position is responsible for all phases of the planning, scheduling and implementation of transmission and distribution utility projects with latitude for exercising initiative and independent decision making in support of the corporate environmental policies and goals, including taking appropriate actions to respond to environmental requirements or incidents in order to minimize environmental liability and ensure compliance.  This position will conduct environmental assessments, permitting, spill/site remediation and soil management, attend public meetings and hearings, and provide oversight of contracts and consultants for such services.

Essential Functions

  • Implements and oversees the organizations environmental policies regarding the impact of the Company’s operations on water, air and land quality, and ensures compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations.
  • Provides environmental consulting on all construction and maintenance projects to ensure compliance with appropriate regulations.  Conducts studies to determine environmental impact, assesses potential impact and develops mitigation measures to limit or prevent such impact.
  • Analyzes environmental conditions on Company sites and recommends changes to prevent or eliminate dangerous substances and materials.
  • Designs and conducts environmental audits and oversees implementation of changes to procedures and processes to minimize hazards and prevent mishaps.
  • Serves as Company liaison with federal, state and local environmental agencies and, when necessary, negotiates on the Company’s behalf.
  • Acts as the Company’s representative at environmental and regulatory hearings and legislative meetings.
  • Organizes and coordinates Company environmental relations with communities and directs the dissemination of pertinent information relating to environmental matters.
  • Provides training and ongoing coaching to Company employees and contractors to ensure they understand environmental compliance requirements and obligations.
  • Maintains current broad-based knowledge of federal, state and local environmental laws, regulations, policies and by-laws and in-depth knowledge in specific area(s) of environmental regulation.
  • Reviews and analyzes existing and proposed federal, state and local environmental laws, regulations, policies and by-laws to assess impacts on the Corporation.

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications

Technical Knowledge/Skill: Requires general understanding of utility industry, and ability to interact persuasively with all levels of the Company and external environmental agencies.  Also requires strong communication and organizational skills.  Ability to use PC desktop applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point).  A working knowledge of GIS preferred.

Education: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Applied Science, Engineering or related discipline.

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years in the energy-related permitting process in Massachusetts.  Requires experience in managing or conducting environmental projects under Federal Permitting Programs regulated under, or by, the Clean Water Act (e.g., Sections 401 & 404, storm water, NPDES and SPCC Compliance), the Clean Air Act, RCRA/CERCLA (solid and hazardous waste, spills, sites), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Section 404 Permitting and Section 7/10 Conformance), the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (endangered species); and Massachusetts Permitting Programs regulated under, or by, the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA), MA Department of Environmental Protection (e.g., water quality, wetlands/waterways, air, noise, solid and hazardous waste management, spill response), Division of Fisheries & Wildlife (Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program) and Massachusetts Historical Commission; and
Local permitting programs in Massachusetts (e.g., conservation commissions for wetlands approvals, zoning boards).

Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver’s license. Certification as a professional wetlands scientist and/or Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional (LSP) and current 40-hour HAZWOPER preferred.

Geoenvironmental Project Manager — Candidates should have broad experience in planning and execution of field investigation programs and development of remedial alternatives for various contaminants in various geologic conditions. Direct working knowledge of, and writing experience for, one or more state regulatory programs is required. Massachusetts Contingency Plan and/or Connecticut Remediation Standards Regulations/Transfer Act experience is desirable. Prior experience with projects that combine environmental remediation with construction is preferred. An advanced degree in environmental engineering or earth sciences and professional registration (P.E., P.G., etc.) are preferred. Four to ten years of relevant experience and strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
